Abstract

This study is motivated by the social phenomenon surrounding early childhood sex education, which is still considered taboo due to the influence of strong local culture, education levels, religious values, and prevailing social norms. These factors shape parental perspectives and practices regarding child-rearing, including how they impart understanding about sex education. This study aims to identify parental approaches to providing sex education to children aged 4–6 and the resulting impact on the children's understanding and behavior. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with the study conducted in Kayangan Hamlet, Sandik Village, Batulayar District. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, with parents of children aged 4–6 serving as the primary informants. Data analysis involved reduction, presentation, and conclusion-drawing, while data validity was verified through source and technique triangulation. The results indicate that parental sex education involves introducing body parts, explaining private areas, instilling personal hygiene habits, and maintaining daily communication. These parenting practices yielded positive outcomes, including increased child awareness regarding their bodies and privacy, the establishment of hygiene habits, the development of basic skills to protect against inappropriate touch, and more open communication with parents. However, some parents still possess limited understanding, resulting in less-than-optimal communication regarding personal body boundaries. Thus, the role of parents is crucial in shaping children's knowledge and behavior from an early age.
